Drill Glass
If you want to drill a hole in glass, the first thing you need to know is what kind of glass you have. You cannot drill a hole in every glass. The following types of glass exist.
- Float glass (flat glass) can be drilled. This glass has the disadvantage that it breaks when broken into many sharp-edged large and small parts that bring a great risk of injury.
- ESG glass (single-pane safety glass) cannot be drilled. This glass refers to a thermally tempered glass. In case of breakage, this glass breaks into very small splinters, some of which are coherent. The risk of injury is low. If you try to drill a hole in an ESG glass, it shatters.
- VSG glass (laminated safety glass) can not be drilled. This glass consists of a compound of two ESG glasses which are connected in the middle with a plastic film. Due to the layered structure, a high breaking strength is achieved. In case of breakage, the shards are additionally held together by the film.
If you want to drill a hole in glass, you have to drill very carefully. It can quickly happen that the glass gets a crack or breaks. But don't worry, if you take a few things into account, a hole in glass also succeeds. First you have to mark the place where you want to drill the hole. This can be done with a piece of tape or paint crepe. The tape prevents the drill from slipping off and you can mark the exact position of the hole on it.

Drill with low speed and exert little pressure on the glass. This will prevent you from accidentally slipping with the drill and scratching the glass. Since glass is very hard, the drilling location must be cooled during the drilling process. Otherwise the drill would be very hot and damaged. A little oil is best suited for cooling, a drop is usually sufficient.
